VAGINOPLASTY

It may sound to be a new term, but not at all in the plastic surgery field, Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that has been around for decades.

What is a Vaginoplasty Surgery?

Also known as posterior colporrhaphy, a vaginoplasty surgery is a procedure performed to tighten the vagina. It is mostly performed when the woman thinks that her vagina is loose or slack. Aging, childbirth among others, are some of the triggers for vaginal looseness or laxity.

Although another option is heating the vaginal tissue with radiofrequency waves or laser, however, this may not work on patients with significant laxity.

Why Women Get A Vaginoplasty Done?

It is believed that after childbirth, a lot of changes occur in the vagina and looseness is one of them. This results from the stretching of the tissues and separation of the muscles. In addition to that, vaginal laxity can lead to sexual dysfunctions in women hence creating a need for vaginoplasty.

In other cases, a vaginoplasty is required following the removal of malignant growths to improve the vagina’s function and it’s structure.

A consultation is required before the procedure. The patient will discuss her goals to the doctor and the doctor will plan the surgery accordingly.

  • Expect the surgery to be conducted either under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.
  • During the procedure, the surgeon will determine the amount of tightening to be done and after this, a pie-shape wedge is marked to know the extra skin to be removed.
  • The tissues are also tightened with strong sutures beneath the skin.

After the surgery.

A stool softener will be administered to a patient for bowel regime.

Vaginal dilation will be taught to the patient.

An indwelling bladder catheter plus the tight vaginal packing will remain in place for at least 7 days.
