What Does Fat Grafting Mean?

Also known as fat transfer or fat injections, fat grafting is a surgical approach of extracting fat from one body region to another. Surgeons do this with the aim of improving the appearance of the intended region.

During this technique, liposuction is used to remove the adipose fat from one area of the body, the fat is then processed and the purified fat is introduced in the intended body region.

Fat grafting is an old technique first performed in 1893 and during this procedure, the fat was removed from the arm to the eye area in order to eliminate the scars previously formed by a bone infection.

The Procedure Of Fat Grafting.

There are generally 3 steps in fat grafting and they include;

The first step involves extracting the adipose fat from the donor region using liposuction. Thin liposuction cannulas with small holes are used.

The fat is then processed “centrifugation”. This separates the debris, dead cells, and the excess fluid.

The refined fat is then injected into the recipient body region according to the measured cubic capacity.
